What makes a nose look wide?
A nose looks wide when one or more of its three parts is broader than the face around it: the bony bridge at the top, the tip in the middle, or the base with the nostrils at the bottom. The word wide is used for all three, but each has a different cause and a different fix.
Width is relative. A nose that is wide next to narrow eyes may look balanced on a broader face, and the surgeon judges it against the distance between your eyes, the width of your mouth and the shape of your cheeks.
How can you tell which part of your nose is wide?
Look at your nose in a front photo, then from below, and compare it with the distance between the inner corners of your eyes. The table below shows what each pattern usually means.
| What you see | Which part is involved | Usual approach |
|---|---|---|
| The upper nose looks broad and flat from the front | Bony bridge: the nasal bones are wide or set apart | Bone cuts (osteotomies) to bring the sides together |
| The tip looks round, boxy or spread out | Tip: wide or bulging lower cartilages, often with thick skin | Reshaping and stitching the tip cartilages, with support |
| The nostrils flare out beyond the corners of the eyes | Alar base: the wings of the nostrils spread outward | Alar base reduction |
| The nostrils look large and round from below | Nostril size and shape, with the base | Careful base and rim reshaping |
| The whole nose looks wide and low | Several parts together, often with a low bridge | A combined plan, sometimes with a graft to raise the bridge |
Many noses are wide in two or three places at once, so treating only one part can leave the nose looking out of balance.
Can a wide bridge be made narrower?
Yes, in most cases. A wide bridge is narrowed by cutting the nasal bones in a controlled way, a step called an osteotomy, and moving them closer together. The cuts are made through tiny openings, and ultrasonic instruments are often chosen for fine control. The piezo rhinoplasty page describes this technique.
The change is limited by the bone and the skin. A very wide bridge with thick skin narrows less than a thin one, and narrowing too much can pinch the airway just beneath the bones. The plan keeps the inside of the nose open as well as the outside.
If the bridge looks wide because it is also low, the answer may not be to narrow it at all but to raise it with a graft, which changes the shadow lines and makes the nose appear slimmer.
How is a wide nose tip refined?
A wide tip is refined by working on the cartilage under the skin, not by removing skin. The surgeon usually works through an open approach to see the cartilages, then narrows them with stitches, trims only where needed and adds support so that the tip keeps its new shape.
The skin decides how sharp the result can be. Thin skin shows every change, while thick skin covers it, so the tip may stay broader than the cartilage underneath. If your skin is thick, expect a slower, softer refinement over the first year, and a plan that favours a balanced tip over a pointed one.
The primary rhinoplasty page shows how the tip is reshaped in a first operation.
What is alar base reduction and does it leave a scar?
Alar base reduction narrows the base of the nose by removing a small wedge of skin where the nostril wing meets the cheek, or at the floor of the nostril. It reduces flaring and brings the nostrils closer to the width of the eyes.
It does leave a scar, but a fine one in a natural crease at the nostril base. Most scars fade to a thin line and are hard to see in daily life. Not everyone needs this step, and some wide bases improve once the tip is narrowed, so the surgeon decides during the operation or beforehand on photos.
It is done with the rest of the rhinoplasty, under the same anaesthesia. Done too aggressively, it can make the nostrils look pinched or uneven, so a conservative cut is usual.
Is a wide nose something that has to be corrected?
Not as a flaw. Wider noses are common across many families and regions, and a wide bridge or a broad base is part of how some faces look. Surgery should aim for a nose that fits your face, not for a standard shape.
Many people keep much of their original character and ask only for a little refinement. The ethnic rhinoplasty page explains how the plan respects the shape of the face and the features you want to keep.
Does a wide nose affect breathing?
A wide nose is not always a blocked one, and a narrow nose is not always clear. Breathing depends on the septum, the valves and the turbinates inside the nose, whatever the outside looks like.
The risk lies in narrowing. If the bridge or the base is made much slimmer without caring for the inside, the airway can tighten. Dr. Delioğlu is an ENT and head and neck surgeon and examines the inside at the consultation, so the plan narrows the outside while keeping, or improving, the airflow. When the septum needs work, the operation is a septorhinoplasty.
What is recovery like after narrowing a wide nose?
Recovery is like other rhinoplasties, with more bruising when the bones are cut and a thin line at the nostril base to look after if the base is reduced. The splint stays on for about 7 days.
| Stage | What to expect |
|---|---|
| First days | Swelling and bruising around the nose and eyes, with a blocked nose. |
| Splint removal | The nose looks narrower but swollen. Stitches at the nostril base are removed. |
| First weeks | Bruising fades. Keep the nostril scars clean and out of strong sun. |
| First months | Swelling settles from the bridge down. The tip is the last to refine. |
| Up to a year or more | The final width shows, and thick skin takes the longest. |
Plan 7 to 10 days in Istanbul. More about healing is on the recovery page.
What does it cost?
Narrowing a wide nose is part of a first rhinoplasty, which generally costs $3,000 to $5,500. If the septum is also corrected, it generally costs $3,500 to $6,000.
Alar base reduction does not usually change the range much, and these are ranges, not quotes. The exact price comes after the photo review, and the cost page sets out what affects it.
Who may not suit this surgery?
It may not suit someone who wants a very narrow nose on a broad face, since this can look out of place. It is also not advised for anyone whose face is still growing, or who cannot stop smoking, because smoking slows healing at the nostril scars.
If you only dislike the look of your nostrils in certain photos, the surgeon may suggest waiting. Honest advice is part of the consultation.
How do you take the next step?
Send photos from the front, both sides and from below using the online analysis. The photo from below shows the base and the nostrils, which are hard to judge from the front alone.
You can also look at similar noses in the before and after photos, and ask questions through the contact page.
